Yes, RedShift 3 uses Internet Explorer's technology as an integral part of the software - for example to view the Dictionary of Astronomy. You must have IE 3.0.2 or later installed. If you don't, choose to run the IE4.0 installer during RedShift installation.
Which IE4.0 option should I choose?
--------------------------------------------
By default, you will be offered the RedShift 3 minimum installation. You need not install active desktop (this option is offered later). Of course, you can choose to install all of IE4.0 and its associated applications.
For RedShift 3 to work, it does not require IE4.0 to be set as your default browser. Once the IE4.0 install process has completed, if you wish to keep another browser as your default browser for the Internet, run up that browser next. Usually the browser will prompt you to set it as the default; just accept this option.
Online usage
---------------
Much of RedShift 3's content is in HTML form. Whilst you are looking at the Dictionary, Photo Gallery, Astronomy Tours, Record Breakers or Help, the information is coming from your copy of RedShift 3. If you choose to link to the News section, your computer will attempt to connect to the Internet. Only at that point are you on-line and possibly incurring on-line charges (this depends on your Internet service). If you have a dial-up connection, be sure to disconnect from your service once you have finished reading on-line material.
USING REDSHIFT 3
Where can I get help with RS3
-------------------------------------
There are multiple help systems in RedShift 3.
The introductory movie which plays when you first start RedShift shows you some of the things you can do, and gives a simple guide to the controls.
The Using RedShift section of the Home Window has one Guided Tour which takes you through the use of each of the six control panels.
The Help manual can be reached from the Help menu, or from the Using RedShift section of the Home Window. It is a comprehensive guide to RedShift, and includes answers to common questions, a guide to the new features in RedShift 3 and a technical appendix explaining the technical background to the program.
Where do I start?
---------------------
If you are a beginner, we suggest that you watch the introduction movie. When you enter RedShift, run some of the Astronomy Tours (from the Home Window).
Then visit Using RedShift, and set up your preferences. Next, take a look at the Record Breakers, or the Photo Gallery.
What screen settings should I use?
-----------------------------------------
RedShift 3 will work with whatever screen settings you are using now. It works best with colors set to hi-color mode, and with 800x600 or 1024x768 resolution. But remember that RedShift will operate slower at higher resolutions.
